Definition of arc of Lowitz.: a rare halo extending obliquely downward and inward from a 22 degree parhelion. This article, like the research on Lowitz arcs, is a work in progress. One problem is that I haven't yet found clear definitions of Lowitz arcs by professional investigators -- possibly because the investigators don't yet have enough photographs of Lowitz arcs to develop clear definitions.

Atlas» Learn more about the world with our collection of regional and country maps.   It has been called as “reflected Lowitz arc” and parhelion legs and arms. People are also calling it just Lowitz arcs, but it is not the same halo as Lowitz arcs which have 35 raypath. (From Parry orientation 35 make the Parry arc and / the Hastings arc and from column orientation you get tangent arc and Wegener arc).

I noticed arcs going upwards from the parhelia, odd shapes of the degree parhelia, sub-helic and Wegener arcs crossing above the Liljequist parhelia, among the more familiar halos. Parhelia at this stage sport at least two 'tails', indicating the presence of Lowitz : Jia Hao. The standard theory explains Lowitz arcs by rotating hexagonal plate-shaped ice crystals. (Tricker, Mueller, Greenler). For this case Greenler´s book shows three light paths generating the lower, the upper and the circle-shaped Lowitz arc. Greenler´s simulations show a sophisticated pattern varying considerably with changing sun elevations.

The 46° Lowitz arcs and their history The common halo observer in Central Europe will associate the term “Lowitz arcs” with short segments below the parhelic circle which connect the parhelia and the 22° halo. These so-called “lower Lowitz arcs” were first documented by T.
