By using coated paper for printing, you add gloss, smoothness and protection to your printed materials. Choosing the right paper coating is essential to make your print pieces stand out. As you are now aware of the different types of available paper coatings and their qualities, you can more easily pick out the one that meets your needs. Books paper have a wider range of weights and bulk than text papers so it is possible to secure almost any desired bulking. Offset papers are similar to the coated and uncoated book paper used for letterpress printing except that sizing is added to resist the slight moisture present in offset printing, and the surface is treated to resist picking.

Let’s examine the three most popular coating choices for the cover of your book: 1) Aqueous Coating, 2) UV Coating and 3) Lamination. 1) Aqueous Coating – GOOD. As the name implies, Aqueous Coating is water-based. Aqueous Coating is available in a variety of sheen levels and can be applied over wet ink while the book covers are still on. Coating restricts how ink bleeds into the paper. When printing sharp and complex images, a coated paper is advantageous. Uncoated paper takes longer to dry. Coated paper offers more finishings, from gloss and satin to matte or even dull. Uncoated paper soaks up .

As the names describe, coated paper has a coating applied to the surface of the paper – uncoated does not.

For most projects, we recommend going with a gloss paper for books that have numerous photos and uncoated paper for books that are consist primarily of text. The coating on coated paper keeps the ink on the surface of the paper until it dries.

Coating is applied during the paper manufacturing process. Coating affects the way that inks are absorbed by the paper, making halftone dots and text stay sharp.

Any paper weight can have a coating, and which coating to choose is largely a creative decision. Coated fine paper or woodfree coated paper (WFC) are primarily produced for offset printing: Standard coated fine papers This paper quality is normally used for advertising materials, books, annual reports and high-quality catalogs.

Professional print buyers consider the following qualities when selecting paper stocks: Paper Density, or Basis Weight. The density of paper is expressed by basis weight. Basis weight is the weight in pounds of sheets of the paper at a standard sheet size, which in the case of book papers is 25″ x 38″.

For uncoated book papers, lb. Choosing the lowest gsm paper, assuming it will save money. Choosing the highest gsm paper, under the assumption that it is of higher quality. Whilst those two assumptions aren't necessarily incorrect, using that reasoning to choose which paper stock to use is risky.

Ink, paper surface coatings like varnish, and paper surfaces themselves — coated or uncoated — interact and may cause printing problems. For instance, you can apply a dull or matte coating to an uncoated sheet for protection, but a gloss coating would look mottled on the same sheet.

Our dull/matte cover is a substantial paper with a smooth, non-shiny coating. It is a heavy 14pt stock well suited for detailed, crisp printing without sacrificing the ability to easily write on the paper. You can also add UV coating on the front of a dull/matte card to add pop to the side that isn't needed for writing.
